Employee Turnover Doesn't Have to Be a Bad Thing
It's time to rethink turnover.
Reid Hoffman shares a thought when it comes to turnover that I think is important to understand, "As an employer, we all play a role in our employees' lives."
"Sometimes we write entire major sections of a book about their career journey and sometimes we may write just a chapter..."
"It's even possible sometimes we're just a footnote."
However it may be, it's important to understand that if you portray goodness and empathy toward those employees who choose to leave, you'll most likely have it returned to you in the future.
In this week's video, I'd like to share with you how I zoom out of these situations to find that turnover doesn't have to be a bad thing and how you can make the most out of it.
6 Step Guide to Attracting the Right Applicants
Hiring is one thing, but hiring the right people that will fit in well with your company, bring valuable skills to the table, and work hard, is another. Follow these six steps and you'll be on your way to your own office dream team.
In order to get through the bad turnover, you'll need empathy and abundance.
- Empathy - Can you put yourself in the shoes of the person that just quit?
- Abundancy - Do you believe that it will all be okay? That you'll find the next new person who will be just as great?
What we need in life is this balance between short-term and long-term. A balance between what we need and what other people need, and in this instance -- it's finding a balance between what's good for the company, what's good for the manager, and what's good for the employee.
Be happy for people that leave for better opportunities.
1. It's the right thing to do.
Put yourself in the perspective of their mentor. If you were trying to help them on the fast track to success, you'd be stoked for them & this new opportunity for growth.
2. That employee, even though they left, may continue to refer job seekers to you.
If you treat people the right way, do the right thing, and move forward with positivity, even when it might be hard, you'll reap the benefits of it later. These employees may leave positive reviews that impact job seekers to apply for your open positions. Think of it as good karma!
3. That employee may come back and work for you in the future.
This could be a huge learning opportunity for them, with the potential to benefit you down the road. They may progress, earn a higher-level role and turn around and add a whole new value to your organization.
At the end of the day, we have to find a way to show up with abundance, knowing that the future will get better. Whether you have the abundance to believe that there might be a whole new, highly capable, hire out there ready to benefit your company, or just believing that doing the right thing and being happy for others will come back as good karma to you in the future.
