S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate entry-level Laboratory Technician to join our Construction Services team in Columbia, South Carolina. Join us at S&ME!

As a Construction Materials Laboratory Technician, you'll play a critical role in testing and analyzing construction materials such as soil, concrete, masonry, and asphalt. Working alongside experienced technicians and professionals, you'll ensure accurate and thorough reporting of test results, maintain equipment, and assist with calibrations. Your work will contribute to the success of our projects by ensuring the materials meet the required standards.

Your Day-to-Day:

• Testing and Reporting: Conduct and document tests on various construction materials with precision and attention to detail. While you collaborate with experienced colleagues, you'll also work independently, ensuring test results are logical, complete, and ready for review.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all laboratory equipment is well-maintained and properly calibrated. Your role will be vital in keeping the lab running efficiently and ensuring the accuracy of our testing processes.

What You Bring:

• A High School diploma/GED
• 0-2 years of experience in a construction materials laboratory
• Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
• Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
• One(1) or more active certifications, a plus:
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

• Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
• Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
• Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
• Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
