Program Description:
The Museum of Science Archives Department is responsible for collecting, organizing and preserving the permanent collections of records which documents the Museum's history, activities, staff and the Boston Society of Natural History and to promote and make the collection accessible to staff and researchers. The Museum of Science Archives provides a unique experience for interns as the institution is almost 200 years old, but the Archives have only been a dedicated program since 2017. Defining the scope and goal of the Archives is ongoing work, as the Archives staff builds partnerships and stewards its collections.
Position Summary:
Interns with the Archives assist with collection stewardship through inventorying and accessioning projects, digitization, and preservation responsibilities. Interns will work with the Senior Archivist to discuss both short-term and long-term solutions for making the Museum of Science collections more accessible. Interns are instructed in preservation and arrangement best practices, as well as Museum standards of professional behavior and service. This internship provides opportunities for students to build upon new or existing skills and interests as well as introducing them to more hands-on work with historic collections.
Responsibilities:
- Create a folder-level inventory of archival records
- Rehousing archival materials into acid-free folders
- Transcribe historic records and extract data from collection materials
- Research collections and related figures to enrich reference assets
- Ingesting data into the Archives catalog database
- Assisting with reference inquiries
Basic Qualifications:
- Enrolled in or recently graduated (less than 1 year) from a graduate archives and/or library science program
- Demonstrated interest in history, archives, library sciences, or museum studies
- Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated reading and writing skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
Location: In-Person (1 Science Park Boston, MA)
Length of Internship: Fall Semester; September - December 2022
Work Schedule: Ideally two full days between Monday - Friday 9a-5p. Internship consists of 14 paid hours per week. Interns receive one unpaid lunch hour per full workday.
Pay Rate: $14.50 per hour
