Apprentice Lineman

PURPOSE:

To provide construction and maintenance of de-energized distribution system; while furthering knowledge and improving lineman skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs the work of an Apprentice Lineman under the supervision of a Journeyman Lineman or above.

Performs work on de-energized secondary and primaries including cable terminations, with no energized lines in the immediate work area; must work with and under the direction of a Lineman 2nd class or above who is observing in the immediate work area and able to stop action.

Learns overhead and underground distribution construction and the related specifications and requirements.

Learns the methods and use of equipment in tree trimming right-of-way clearing and control.

Learns the functions, types, and parts of distribution transformers.

Follows all safety rules and regulations and immediately reports all accidents to assigned supervisor.

Operates automotive equipment, when required, completing the necessary safety and mileage reports.

Uses two-way radio in accordance with Co-op and FCC regulations.

Learns classes, weights, and the inspection of poles; also, the methods of handling, setting, and supporting poles.

Learns the use of various types and sizes of conductors, their clearances, and the methods of reeling out and joining conductors.

Within the limits of this classification, perform any other activity when called upon.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be able to communicate with the public and co-workers.

Must be able to perform work by following simple instructions.

Must have sufficient physical health to perform the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the job.

Must be available for call outs and willing to work extra and irregular hours.

Must have legible handwriting.

Must hold or be able to obtain and keep a Class A CDL.

Must comply with all general job requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee required to work indoors and outdoors, with exposure to heat and cold.
